Creating and Using Taxonomies

Organize and categorize your content effectively with taxonomies.

Creating A Taxonomy

⚠️

Before creating a taxonomy, make sure you have the appropriate access to Content Lion that grants privileges for creating taxonomies

Follow these steps for creating a new taxonomy in Content Lion:

Step 1: Navigate to the Taxonomy page

From the sidebar, click on the Content tab and select Taxonomies from the dropdown menu

Step 2: Create a New Taxonomy

On the Taxonomy page, click the Create button, typically found at the top right. Provide the following information:

  • Name
  • Abbreviation - Up to 3 characters that will be used in smaller displays of the taxonomy name

Click the Save button to create the taxonomy.

Step 3: Configure the Taxonomy Structure

Select the new taxonomy from the list and click Edit. Click Add Category to open a modal where you can add a new category. Continue creating sibling and child categories as needed. Category names should be clear, user-friendly, and unambiguous. For each category, editors can:

  • Rename the category
  • Change its position in the hierarchy
  • Delete the category

When you’re finished with your changes, click the Done button to return to the Taxonomy page.

Step 4: Publish the Taxonomy

To use a taxonomy on assets in a repository, it first has to be published. Select the taxonomy and click Publish. Choose the target repository and publishing channel, then confirm you want to proceed. Click Publish to complete the process.

💡

Publishing a taxonomy works slightly differently than publishing an asset. While publishing makes both available to the content delivery network, a published taxonomy is not consumed directly by websites or applications. Instead, it becomes available for use within asset repositories to be applied to content items.

Assigning a Taxonomy to a Repository

Step 1: Navigate to the Repositories page

From the sidebar, click on the Content tab and select Repositories

Step 2: Attach the taxonomy to the repository

Scroll down to the Taxonomies section and add the taxonomy to the list. Click Save to complete

Organizing Assets with Taxonomies

Step 1: Navigate to the Asset Repository

From the sidebar, click on the Assets tab

Step 2: Assign Categories from the Taxonomy to the Asset

Select one or more assets and open the Properties Panel. Select Categories from the dropdown and click on Add Categories. Here you can either select a taxonomy in the dropdown or search for a category. Choose which categories to assign to the asset and click Add to save the assignment.

Filtering Assets By Taxonomy

Step 1: Navigate to the Asset Repository

From the sidebar, click on the Assets tab

Step 2: Locate the Taxonomy Filter

On the repository interface, click on the Filter button to open the filter panel (located to the left of the repository selection dropdown)

Step 3: Apply the Filter

Navigate to the Categories tab and browse the hierarchy of categories or use the search box to find categories. Selecting one or more categories will update the asset list automatically and display only assets tagged with the selected categories. To remove the filter, simply deselect the categories or click Clear All.

Effects of Editing or Deleting a Taxonomy

  • Taxonomy structure changes appear in the asset repository only after the draft is published
  • Deleting a draft of a published taxonomy deletes only the draft, not the taxonomy
  • If a taxonomy has never been published, deleting its draft deletes the taxonomy
  • Deleting a taxonomy category that is assigned to assets removes the category from those assets, regardless of asset publication status
